Hack and Slash

While explaining my game to my wife and friend I was asked what is wrong with Hack and Slash?

Wikipedia defines hack and slash as:

The term “hack and slash” has its roots in “pen and paper” RPGs such as Dungeons & Dragons, denoting campaigns of violence with no other plot elements or significant goal.

So let’s start with the benefits of hack and slash. First in most games combat rules are very well defined and mapped out. It is easy for newer players to follow the rules and have their questions answers

Most players do enjoy hack and slash as it is a chance to smack down the bad games. Nothing says relaxing after a hard day of work or school then showing how awesome your character is in combat.

The biggest benefit would be the fun factor. Let’s face it, fighting the big boss or a horde of invaders gets the blood pumping. The uncertainty of the dice roll, the thrill of the battle. There is nothing like it! And should the players be victorious there will be bragging rights for future retellings of the encounter.

Now we will turn are attention to the drawbacks of hack and slash. It becomes boring after so many encounters. Everything is combat and the answer to every problem is to fight. Players who experience these types of games begin to create new characters with just combat related skills and abilities in mind.

The biggest drawback is there usually is no story with these types of games. Whether it is romance, politics, or mysterious intrigue those scenarios are enhance with hack and slash. But if hack and slash is the primary diving force the it does not really play well with others.

The dungeon master charge is to find the right mix for his/her players. In my current pathfinder game I want to touch on all aspect of the game in greater detail. I also like to reward players for finding solution outside of combat when possible. You really cannot every truly get rid of hack and slash but you must learn portion control.

Hack and slash should be viewed as a dessert on the food pyramid. If measured appropriately it should enhance the meal of the overall game.

I would love to know your thoughts on hack and slash! Do you agree or disagree with my assessment? Please leave a comment in the comment section below 🙂
