Know Thy Players (February 2018)

I must say that I am enjoying my players and my game. I will always be somewhat nervous about the encounters I put before my players.

For this session of the game I wanted to try something different. Rather than having the traditional combat encounter I wanted to give the players an alternative session one that was not based on combat but other aspect of the game.

The game started out with a trial for Runty (the kobold prisoner from the last game). Runty was pleading for his life and wanted to be a member of the tribe (tribe for him is the towns people). Each of the players were given an opportunity to speak during the trial. The could ask questions, make statements, vote in favor or against Runty’s. All but two players participated, one was because they arrived late to the session, and the other had no input.

It was decided that Runty would be put on probation and would perform community services and then be welcome into the town. One of the players actually allowed Runty to work for them. I think the entire experience gave the players a new look on kobolds, but I still have one player stating kobolds eat babies.

The second event was the preparation for the festival. There were various jobs that needed to be done such building of tents and constructions of trenches to the building of merchants carts and food preparation. This provide the players with a chance to showcase some of their skills and abilities.

The players came up with some creative ways to completed some of these tasks, some were successful some were not. Nevertheless they received experience for their attempts at the tasks set before them.

The third and final event was the actual festival itself. Here I had several events for the players to try they were:

  • Jousting
  • Sword-fighting
  • Wrestling
  • Arm Wrestling
  • Ring the bell
  • Climb the Wall
  • Tug of War
  • Log balance
  • Tightrope walking
  • Ring Toss
  • Juggling
  • Riddles
  • Talent Show
  • Beauty Pageant
  • Dancing

I actually spent the most time make rules for Jousting and only one player attempted it. A Halfling with a riding dog as a mount gave it a go but was quickly defeated by Dirk the Valiant. The monk became the Log rolling Balance champ, defeating everyone that challenge him. The Sorcerer but on a light show for the talent show. The other Hafling had a battle of the bands with another performer.

On the final day the dwarves arrived and offered dwarven ale to everyone to celebrate the festival. The merchants looking to improve relations with the dwarves wanted to discuss opening trade with the dwarves and requested the players escort them to the dwarven kingdom.

The negotiation over the player’s pay went back and forth with the player seeking better compensation. I rather enjoyed the negotiations 🙂

It was a great session 🙂 The feedback I received from the players was they enjoyed the session!

I still have yet to be rated by my players 🙁 despite the awesome rate your DM/GM tool 😉

Edit: Changed incorrect date of 2017 to 2018
