Paramount Confirms World War Z 2 And Dungeons & Dragons AT CinemaCon

Paramount Pictures is one very busy studio right now, and the announcements out of the 2018 CinemaCon just keep on a-comin’.

But there were two big genre reveals on Thursday that have piqued our interest: the confirmation that a sequel to World War Z is still definitely happening, as well as the studio’s plans to make a new Dungeons & Dragons movie.

Looper reports that Paramount flashed a logo for WWZ 2 during a production slate montage toward the end of their presentation, and a Paramount rep confirmed to SYFY Wire that WWZ 2 is indeed part of the studio’s future plans.

David Fincher — who has long been rumored to be helming the project — admitted last year that he was “trying” to make the movie work, telling Little White Lies: “We’re just deconstructing it right now against the mythology that exists to see where we can go.”

The first movie — directed by Marc Foster — was a surprise hit when it was released back in 2013, grossing just over $540 million worldwide on a $190 million budget. We’re already very excited, and a little afraid, to imagine where Fincher could take the franchise next, if he officially signs on.

Meanwhile, Paramount will also be taking their stab at a Dungeons & Dragons movie on July 23, 2021. In announcing as much, they used a logo that reportedly matched the popular role-playing game’s, which is promising. The 2000 version directed by Courtney Solomon was savaged by critics and bombed at the box-office, so we’re hoping that this reboot (if you can call it that) will fare a little better. A made-for-TV sequel, Wrath of the Dragon God (also produced by Solomon) followed it in 2005.

Another promising sign for the project is that The LEGO Batman Movie helmer Chris McKay is said to be on directing duties.

These exciting developments come after Paramount Pictures also confirmed at CinemaCon that a fourth rebooted Star Trek movie set in the Kelvin universe is now officially underway, with director S.J. Clarkson taking charge and Chris Hemsworth returning as the father of Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine).

Are you pumped about these movies making their way to the big screen? Let us know in the comments below.
