Seth’s Humble Beginnings (as told by Seth)

Most would say the union between Elves and Humans are frayed. And that no good could come of that. There are those who would disagree. One such person is Seth. Born from the union of a human father and an elven mother. Most half breeds are considered outcasts and shun from one or both societies. Usually they are left to fend for themselves.

I on the other hand was born to privilege. Both my mother and father come from a wealth linage and are considered royalty. Their first goal was to secure my education. This included becoming fluent in different languages, reading and writing, and an appreciation for the fine arts. Many of my childhood years were spent learning of ancient cultures, social and economics of the land. Through all that my focus, my affinity became music.

It seemed that when I played or hum a verse I could captivate and audience. For a short period no one would be concern of my lineage, only the music I play. To some I would see the appreciation for the melodies, for others it seemed to give them hope, something to look forward to.

One night, I slipped into the woods to star gaze and I heard a soft voice singing. I was enthralled by it, words cannot describe it the words and the music was beautiful. I followed the sound till I came across a strange creature. On one hand I was scared by its appearance but the music soothed my fear away. It stopped playing and looked at me. I asked it to continue to play so that I may listen and perhaps learn. I spoke several languages repeating my request. The creature tilted its head and said “Hello Seth, I have been expecting you”. It knew my name.

He introduced himself as Thaedous the Swift, and that he was waiting to meet me so that he could train me as his apprentice. Apparently Thaedous had been watching me for some time, and was waiting for the right moment to make his presence known. I of course invited him to come meet my parents and to play for them. He reluctantly agreed and we went back to my home. Both of my parents knew instantly what he was. After an evening snack Thaedous graced us with his music, and though I would never admit it I felt like crying because this music was a sheer masterpiece. His music moved your very soul into a mix bag of emotions.

Thaedous completed his performance and informed my parents that he would be taking me as an apprentice. My mother was very happy saying that it was a great honor. My father appeared a little disappointed; I think he wanted me to be a warrior like him. I think I could have done it but I do not know of any people who are as virtuous as he is. For you see my father is a Paladin and that road may be too hard for me travel on. I do wish I could make my father proud but I am not sure I have what it takes to do it.

Side Note – I am sure if anyone is reading my memoirs you may be wondering what it is my mother did. She is a strange one she has told me the story time and time again and each time she tells it I enjoy it like a little child. My mother, whose name is Allura, was taught as most elves are and her passion was swords play. She became the best at swordsmanship battling both elves, humans, dwarves, and other races. She kept honing her skills till she could become the best. She said she was practicing one day in the woods and she came across and elderly man. He smiled at her sword play and said she was very impressive. My mother pointed to the fact that she is the best with a sword. That seemed to tickle him and he said swords aren’t everything. For some reason this riled my mother up and she said I can disarm anyone with my sword. He laughed even louder and said at least you have dedication. The man rose and said, “Lets have a small wager, I bet I can best you and if I win you have to honor my request”. My mother replied, “If I win, then you most follow me around for the remainder of your life, your job will be to see to the maintenance of my weapons”. The old man nodded and said “I agree”.

My mother really didn’t take the man serious and wanted to teach him a good lesson. On that day it was my mother who learned the lessons. When the combat began, the man spoke in an arcane language and my mother could not wield her sword. It became heavy with every passing second. Before my mother knew it she was sitting down and staring at the man unable to move. He smiled and said, If I were an evil man I would torture you or kill you. As it stands I consider myself a good man who desperately wants to touch eternity. The only way I can do that is to impart my knowledge onto a dedicated pupil. I ask that according to our wager you abandon your sword and become my apprentice for the rest of my life. My mother agreed and learns humility on that day. She always to tell me never to underestimate an opponent and that sometimes a defeat can be a victory. For you see my mother is a very powerful mage, but only very few people know that. To others she is a sage of great knowledge.

Know back to my original story sensing that my father was disappointed I decided that I would not go with Thaedous. I looked at my father and told him that I wanted to follow in his footsteps as best as I can. He grinned and said, “Seth, I appreciate what you’re trying to do but please follow your passion for music. Where I would up hold our way of life with a sword you can do the same with your music. Go Seth and make us proud! I was stunned I thought he was disappointed but I clearly read him wrong. Yet something still seemed wrong. I turned to Thaedous and asked to meet him tomorrow evening in the forest. He agreed and then left. I needed some extra time to speak with my mother alone.

Then it was revealed to me, according to my mother, my father was disappointed with his own mortality. For you see he wanted so spend as much time as he could with his wife and son. For his time is limited because of his race. I had to think about that, it also meant that most likely my mother would outlive me. No more than ever I wanted to give my father his wish I wanted to stay with him while I could. Who has time to be off learning when each day should be cherished and spent with those you love.

I met Thaedous the next day and shared with him my dilemma and told him that I would not join him. Because my time with my father was limited and I wanted to spend as much time as I could. He listened to me and then told me of a sacred well. It was rumored to grant immortality to those who drank from the well, and that perhaps my father could drink of the well. He told me that as he trained me he would tell me everything he knows about it and what must be done to drink or take some of the liquid in the special well.

It sounded far fetch but what did I have to lose, and why would Thaedous lie? So I became his apprentice and we traveled and I learn the art of storytelling and music. I enjoyed training under Thaedous; I was a sponge absorbing his wealth of knowledge. When I learned all I could from Thaedous we parted ways. I really could not thank him enough for all that he done for me. He in turned thank me for being his best pupil and wished me luck in finding the fountain of youth.

My goal is do whatever good I can, like my father. To offer information to those who need it like my mother. To give people hope in their despair like my teacher. Ultimately music is my weapon, my armor, my lively hood. With it I hope to make things right one day at a time.
