Byrth pulled Lucius and I into the meeting room and informs us it is time to make our move. He compliments us on our effectiveness and tells us we get to determine who we will assassinate.
There are two targets, first Unger Boltmain the captain of the quarry master which is the city guards. He is to be eliminated with his wife and two daughters. The second target was Vam Yanger a Elvin mage in a affluent part of town.
We inform Byrth we will eliminate Unger. My reason was that I felt he was the weakest of the two targets and would perhaps need our aid the most. Lucius shared my thought process and we headed off to our task at hand.
Instead of assassinating him were were going to warn him of the fact he is marked for death. I hide in the shadows and move silently leaving Lucius in order to sneak into Unger home.
I have to admit it is creepy sneaking into someone home and watching them have a discussion while their children play in the other room. I announced myself to Unger and sit at the table with my hands open and place on the table. Unger wife grabs her girls and moves into the bedroom where she trains a crossbow on me. Unger for his part grabs his long sword and waits for me to explain.
I tell him everything, from how I am under cover infiltrating the brotherhood in order to bring him down. How I was publicly humiliated by Lady Pesba only to be hired by her to complete this task. I explained how Lucius and I interrupted their weapons smuggling ring. How the order plans to destroy the entire structure of the city.
I was breaking through to Unger though he still did not appreciate me breaking into his home. Lucius arrives and backs up my story. Bless Lucius heart he almost mess up everything by asking for Unger’s ear lobe to be a convincing proof of success.
We finally agree the ear lobe is not necessary and come of with a plan for Unger and his family to lay low and appear dead. I leave a thieves cant message on the door that Unger and his family have been assassinated.
Lucius and I rush to the aid of Vam. I scale her tower and successful pick the window lock only to find it is closed my magical means. I can hear voices inside her tower only for them to go silent. I scaled the roof and puncture it in order to listen in. I can hear people saying it should have work but the mage is to savvy. I then hear talking below in what I believe is Lucius voice.
I rush to Lucius aid, leaping off the roof landing behind the monk. With a continuous fluid motion I stab the monk. Glancing at the battlefield I notice Lucius had put one of the monks to sleep. The monk I just stabbed disappeared into smoke and reappear at Lucius taking my fried down with a flurry of blows.
I had a fight on my hand, I rushed him and stabbed him again. We traded blows before he got the better of me. As I saw the entire world blacken around me I could hear a voice saying “What are you doing? They are one of us.”
Good times! That final encounter was a good lesson in carefully reading spells. A mistake I’ve made several times myself. The Shade Monks, as I called them in game (I’ll post the link to the source document as I did not create them myself) used an ability to turn invisible. Lucius attempted to locate them with faerie fire but didn’t realize they had moved. He had planned to use Dissonant Whispers but mistakenly thought he had to see the target. In fact he would just need the target to hear him which would have worked and potentially altered the fight. He used Sleep successfully on one of the monks but didn’t have enough hit points worth of spell to work on both. Still, it was a great plot twist and I’m sure everyone wants to know what happened to Silas and Lucius. Stay tuned to Evolvingrpg.com for the next chapter in the story!
