This is my tale, it is neither the beginning nor the end.
“Swear your allegiance, so that I may release you from this life” shouted the invader.
Solarflare looked at priest who laid slumped over a few feet away. Was his friend dead or alive? His thoughts dismissed by a quick slap from the reptilian invaders claw.
“I said swear your allegiance, human scum”.
Looking up all Solarflare could see was darkness. Many years had passed since they came. Three years ago, they attacked without any provocation. Earth mightiest heroes rose to the challenge to defend their world.
As the tide of battle turned in favor of the heroes, the invaders blotted out the sun. Heroes were forces to fight in pure darkness. One by one Earth’s champions fell to the invaders, who power seemed magnified by the darkness.
Those heroes whose powers thrived on light were powerless, those who generate light were hunted and force to swear allegiance before being slaughtered in public to break the morale of resistance.
Scanning the crowd Solarflare saw the look of hope and despair on so many people faces. He had become a symbol for the resistance and now it appeared his time was at an end.
The invader commander placed his jagged claw around Solarflare and began to squeeze. “Swear your allegiance now!”
Solarflare whisperer softly “I…swear…”
The commander eased his death grip on Solarflare to hear the fallen symbol words.
“I…swear…to fight you with my last breath!” The crowd erupted in cheers, the commander taken aback eased his grip further just enough for Solarflare to break free.
Solarflare took a deep breath and flew straight up. His heart was heavy for leaving priest but he hoped his friend would continue to carry on the good fight.
People all around looked up and saw the tiny glow of light rocketing to the heavens. Solarflare pushed himself to the limits and flew to where he imagines the sun would be. His final conscious thought was let there be light.
The commander laughed as he watches the tiny light disappear. Heads began to slump and the muffled cries of the oppressed were heard.
A scream, followed with a cheer, as the people heads began to raise. The rays of the sun were piercing the darkness. Once again, the light was shining and overcoming the darkness. This was not humankind final hour.
